Ashneet Kaur

As a Chancellor’s student fellow, Ashneet has been developing a project focused on educating students at Riverside City College and beyond about the environmental impacts of fast fashion. To support this initiative, she has created a toolkit that outlines the industry's detrimental effects on both humans and the environment. This resource provides actionable steps for students to adjust their shopping routines to help reduce water contamination, CO₂ emissions, and landfill pollution.

In addition to this project, Ashneet is collaborating with fellow students Alyna Esteem and Trinie Ngo on the Clean California Project at Riverside City College. Her contributions involve conducting a litter assessment and promoting clean-up efforts across the campus.

Projects

Fast Fashion Toolkit:

This toolkit is meant to act as a resource for individuals who are unaware of the extensive and damaging effects of fast fashion on both the people and the planet. It is designed to educate those who wish to learn more about the fast fashion industry to take a stand against the cheap, low-quality fibers produced by fast fashion corporations.

The toolkit defines fast fashion, explains how this model negatively impacts our environment, and gives actionable steps and alternatives that individuals can adopt to stop feeding into the corporate cycle of overconsumption.

Climate Palooza

Sat, April 18th    West LA College

The student climate fellows attended the Climate Palooza Arts Festival at West LA College and attended workshops, learning more about climate and sustainability in fashion, art, and technology.

One highlight was a workshop on sashiko mending led by Clementina Martinez-Masarweh, who shared the origins of the mending and taught participants how to repair their own garments. After the session, Ashneet Kaur had the opportunity to discuss her fast fashion toolkit with Clementina and was particularly fascinated by Clementina's current work on her new film regarding the impact of microplastics. This new learning experience led to a newfound interest in different mending techniques and the impacts of microplastics, inspiring Ashneet to research various mending methods for future educational materials on reducing fast fashion and for her upcoming presentation at the Student Climate Convergence.
